For any mental health difficulty, Dr Jacob Ellis will offer a detailed clinical assessment, formulation and clinical diagnosis.
He will work with your existing care network to develop a collaborative management plan to guide next steps.
Please see below for specific ways that a psychiatric assessment and formulation might help particular symptoms and conditions.
Depression
Collaborative working with your psychological therapist to develop understanding of causes and triggers of symptoms
Prescription of antidepressant medications to manage symptoms of low mood, reduced energy, decreased concentration and poor appetite
Prescription of medication to help improve sleep initiation
Development of behaviourally activating strategies to gradually improve functioning over time
Functional Symptoms
Recognition of the emotional impact of the complex medical journey and impact of symptoms on day to day life
Helping young people and families to understand the mind-body connection.
A clinical approach that recognises that functional symptoms are real, impairing and not “all in your head”
Development of a practical goal-based management plan in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues
Treatment of mental health symptoms as needed
Anxiety
Collaborative working with your psychological therapist to develop understanding of causes and triggers of symptoms
Specific anxiety diagnosis (e.g. GAD, OCD, panic, social anxiety etc)
Prescription of antidepressant medications to help improve symptoms, e.g. reduction of frequency and intensity of panic, overthinking, sleep quality and low energy
Development of strategies to identify and manage triggers of symptoms in day to day life
Self-Harm
Development of a clear safety plan to recognise and manage thoughts of self-harm, and personalised strategies to seek additional support from family, clinicians and emergency services
Close working with NHS CAMHS multidisciplinary services to provide wrap around care for a young person in mental health crisis
Parent work to support a young person with managing thoughts and urges to self-harm
Advocacy for the urgent needs of the young person to the wider clinical network
ADHD
Evaluation of impact of symptoms and non-medical treatment strategies (such as tools to manage impulsivity and inattention, adaptations at school and understanding of family and wider network of diagnosis)
Prescription of stimulant and non-stimulant medication to manage symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity
Close monitoring of possible side effects including impact on appetite, weight, height and blood pressure
Shared care with NHS GP to provide ongoing prescriptions to minimise costs to families
Liaison
Working with young people with complex networks of care and longer term health conditions (such as inflammatory bowel disease, epilepsy, cancer)
Contribution to multidisciplinary meetings to develop a clear shared understanding of a young persons goals and needs
Advocacy for that young person’s clinical needs to the wider health, education and social care network
